ZIPP 404 FIRECREST TUBULAR DISC-BRAKE REAR WHEEL
ZIPP 404 FIRECREST TUBULAR DISC-BRAKE REAR WHEEL

hen you want an aero road wheel that climbs lickety split for your disc-brake bike, Zipp has you covered with their 404 Firecrest Tubular Disc-Brake Wheels. The 404 tubular saves a good bit of weight over the clincher version, even adding strength, and it can be both your road racing and cyclocross wheel provided you glue on the appropriate tubs at the right times. Overall strength and stiffness are important to Zipp. These rims come over from the rim-brake version of the wheels. Zipp didn’t want to detract from impact resistance or lateral rigidity. So you get the same rims, but you’ll find 24 spokes front and rear, with a two-cross pattern both front and rear. In both cases, the change is as a result of needing to counteract the forces that stopping a rotor by the hub create. The spokes are the excellent, and light weight Sapim CX-Ray’s. The rim itself is the proven 404 Firecrest shape: 58mm deep, getting as wide as 26.53mm, it moves through the wind but is still light enough for climbing. The oval shape that is blunt on both the leading and trailing edges is not only good in a headwind, but very stable in crosswinds. The width means a better tire shape, even with narrow 23mm tires, providing more air cushion and a better contact patch. Greater comfort and lower rolling resistance result. Weight for the front wheel is 710g, the rear 835g. The hubs are a good bit different than what you’ll find on rim-brake wheels. Zipp employs their 77/177D hub set, which was purpose-built for disc braking. The flanges are slightly taller to work around the six-hole rotor mounts and the 17mm axle. While you can see that the spokes have a two-cross pattern, it actually possesses the lateral stiffness of a three-cross thanks to the size of the flanges and the orientation of the spokes. The benefits of the design are better aerodynamics and greater lateral stiffness. For rear wheels, Zipp offers both a Campagnolo-compatible, and Shimano/SRAM-compatible cassette body. The latter comes with a spacer for 8/9/10-speed cassettes. In both cases, the 177D hub body allows you to install a SRAM XD-cassette body for super-wide range gearing. The wheel comes with quick release, end caps to convert the hub for thru-axle use (end caps are hand swappable), rim strip, valve extender, and Zipp Tangente tube. The end caps can turn the front wheel into 12x100mm and 15x100mm thru axles, and the rear wheel 12x135 and 12x142mm thru-axles. Zipp has taken innovation in their system to a new level with these tubes, which feature an aluminum, rather than brass, stem. Lighter, better machined, and possessing a removable valve core. It also improves the balance of the spinning wheel. The wheels are not designed for compatibility with tubeless systems. Tricking out your disc-brake road bike is easy with the Zipp 404 Firecrest Carbon Tubular Disc-Brake wheels....

ZIPP 404 FIRECREST DISC TUBELESS CLINCHER REAR WHEEL
ZIPP 404 FIRECREST DISC TUBELESS CLINCHER REAR WHEEL

Zipp’s expanded disc brake wheelset lineup now includes a 404 Firecrest Disc Brake Tubeless Clincher Wheelset. Now that you have a disc brake bike, your friends and opponents are going to regret it when you install these wheels. While this wheel is tough enough for gravel grinding and cyclocross, it is best utilized as a road racing wheel, hoops you want to use in crits, in flat to rolling road races, and in rolling time trials. Triathletes who fear getting buffeted by the wind, can run the 404 front with a deeper rear, or two 404’s and get lots of speed while not worrying at all about side winds. While the Firecrest name has been retained from the rim-brake carbon clincher of the same depth, and the design principles remain the same, the rim has been largely redesigned around the needs of wider and tubeless tires as well as braking needs. The third-generation ABLC dimples on the rims, the pattern of which is specific to the 404 depth, have been extended all the way to the tire. This is because there’s no more brake track. Material has also been moved around because the brake track isn’t necessary. The depth remains 58mm, but the max rim width has been nipped in to 26.4mm down from 26.53mm. The internal rim width is 19mm, up from 16.25mm. This 19mm width means that you should use tires no narrower than 23mm, and that the width has been optimized for 25mm wide tires. If you want to take these off road, because you’ve put them on your adventure bike, have no fear. Zipp has confidence in their wheels for off-road applications. When the embarked on creating their first carbon clincher, they benchmarked aluminum rims, knowing they had to make something stronger before they’d feel comfortable releasing the wheel to market. They exceeded aluminum rim strength and then some. Zipp employs their 77/177D hub set, which was purpose-built for disc braking. There are 24 aero Sapim CX-Ray spokes, both front and rear. A cross pattern is necessary in front to counter the forces of braking. The flanges are slightly taller to work around the six-hole rotor mounts and the 17mm axle. While you can see that the spokes have a two-cross pattern, it actually possesses the lateral stiffness of a three-cross thanks to the size of the flanges and the orientation of the spokes. The benefits of the design are more aero and shorter spokes. The rotor mounting method is six-bolt. The front wheel weighs in at 800g, the rear 915g. Maximum recommended tire pressure is 125psi, which should be overkill for any tire you’d want to install on this wheel. Maximum recommended rider weight is 250lbs. For rear wheels, Zipp offers both a Campagnolo-compatible, and Shimano/SRAM-compatible cassette body. The latter comes with a spacer for 9/10/11-speed cassettes. In both cases, the 177D hub body allows you to install a SRAM XDR Driver body for super-wide range gearing. The wheel comes with quick releases and endcaps to convert the hub for thru-axle or quick-release use. The included endcaps can convert the front wheel from 100x12mm to 100x15mm to quick release. The rear has endcaps for 142x12mm and quick release. They also include a spacer to convert the cassette body from eleven-speed to ten-speed. Also included are: rim strip and a tubeless valve, both installed at the factory, and a valve core removal tool. The Zipp 404 Firecrest Carbon Clincher Tubeless Disc Brake wheelset is the road racing wheel that gives you time trial speed without disc wheel weight or crosswind issues....

ZIPP 404 FIRECREST CARBON CLINCHER REAR WHEEL
ZIPP 404 FIRECREST CARBON CLINCHER REAR WHEEL

The Zipp 404 Firecrest Carbon Clincher might look deep at 58mm,but it’s light at 1615g for the set. They’re wheels that master not only the flats, but rolling hills, and won’t catch you out on short, steep pitches. The Firecrest Carbon Clincher was a big step forward. This iteration of the 404 is faster and better still, thanks to the lessons they’ve learned in the intervening years and the trickling down of several technologies from their NSW wheels. Wheelset weight is down to 710g front, 905g rear, 615g for the set, 75g lighter than the previous iteration. Less weight means they spin up easier and are easier to hold speed when climbing. The wheels are more aero than predecessors. The shape has been tweaked: the depth remains at 58mm, but the width has been tweaked to 25mm at the brake track, with a 16.5mm internal width. The shape is better in all conditions, particularly crosswinds, thanks to the application of their ABLC SawTooth dimpling pattern, a NSW innovation, which reduces side loads in crosswind situations. Not quite down to box rim loads, but pretty close. The rim walls start at the blunt edge of the spoke side of the rim, but then gently curve outward to help keep the aerodynamics great with 25mm tires. The ShowStopper textured braking surface is another innovation that started with NWS. This is the 317 curved, vertical grooves on each side on the brake track that help move water off the surface and reduce stopping distances. In the wet or dry, this brakes as well as the best aluminum rims on the market. They also added their 77/177 hubset to the rims. The 18/24 hubs feature straight-pull Sapim CX-Sprint spokes, with the front radial and the rear two-cross The rear hub has cassette body options: a SRAM 10/11-speed cassette body, a Campagnolo-compatible 10/11-speed body, and or a SRAM XDR driver body for wider-ranging cassette options, including 1x 10-42 cassettes. The Zipp 404 Firecrest Carbon Clincher wheels come with Zipp’s Tangente Platinum Evo brake pads, rim strips, Zipp valve extenders, and quick releases. The quick releases have wide lever bodies to reduce pressure in your palm and are designed to sit nearly flush with the frame when closed. ...
